Ok, so let’s get this blog started! I was in Frederiksberg today to do a test with AimHigh which my cycle club arranged. This was the first time I tried this, so was a bit uncertain about what to expect. After having my weight and body fat measured I got on the indoor cycle to do the real test. There are 3 things tested:
- A 10 sec. wind-gate test, which tests your ability to work anaerobically and explosively;
- A staircase test, to consider and test your lactate threshold (acid threshold). The test gives a picture of your ability to work aerobically (intensive endurance); and
- A 5 min max test that shows your greatest aerobic capacity.
I didn’t expect a walk in the park – that’s for sure. Doing a max test, you’ve gotta reach your maximum heart rate beat/min, which is always hard work. But overall, not much harder, or different, than a spinning class.
The test results are here:
So what do we make of all this? Well, the most important and key figure for any cyclist is watt/kg. It’s what non-farm payrolls used to be in the financial markets….to put it simply, it shows how much power you can produce and how much mass you need to move.
So is 4,03 w/kg working at the acid threshold and 4,87 w/kg working at max for 5 minutes good or bad? well, it’s a status. And the main thing is that it improves every single time it’s tested!
That means I need to be either stronger or lose some weight – ideally both! Looking at a BMI of 23,58 and fat % of 14,42 it’s possible to cut 2-3 kilos without loosing any power. So that s what I m aiming for. 76 kg or lower when we stand on the starting line 4th of July!
The best thing about being tested though, is that I don’t get to ride outdoors doing the winter. Last time I was riding outdoors was back in November in Fuerteventura:
so, it’s really hard to keep track of your shape and stamina when you are “only” doing spinning and running. But events like these do keep the motivation going during the long and cold winter months.
Big lunch prepared now!
